Festival tickets are non-refundable. A medical emergency abroad can cost tens of thousands of euros. Your camping gear can be stolen in broad daylight. And some festivals get cancelled at the last minute : leaving you out of pocket on travel and accommodation too.
Festival travel insurance exists for exactly these situations. But not all policies are created equal, and many standard travel insurance plans exclude the very things festival-goers most need. Here's what to look for, what to avoid, and when a policy is genuinely worth buying.
Do You Actually Need Festival Travel Insurance?
For a local day festival where you're driving 30 minutes from home, probably not. But the calculus changes quickly once you add distance, expense and medical risk:
- 📍 Domestic day trip: low risk : skip the insurance, check your credit card benefits instead
- ✈️ Flight + hotel + tickets abroad: insure it : the total cost to lose is often €500–€1 500+
- 🏕️ Multi-day camping festival: consider gear cover and medical : crowd injuries and weather events are real
- 🌍 Non-EU destination (USA, UK post-Brexit, Asia): medical cover is essential : costs without it can be catastrophic
The key question is: how much money are you putting at risk that you can't get back? If the answer is more than €150–200, a policy that costs €15–40 makes sense.
What Festival Travel Insurance Typically Covers
A good festival travel policy : either a dedicated product or a comprehensive standard travel policy with the right add-ons : should cover:
- ✅ Festival cancellation or curtailment: if the festival is cancelled by the organiser due to artist withdrawal, extreme weather or insolvency : not always covered in standard policies
- ✅ Trip cancellation for personal reasons: illness, bereavement, redundancy : you can't attend, and you lose your costs
- ✅ Medical emergencies: hospital treatment, ambulance, repatriation : essential for travel outside the EU/EEA
- ✅ Baggage and personal belongings: tent, sleeping bag, clothing : subject to individual item limits (often €150–300 per item)
- ✅ Cash and cards: limited cover (usually €100–300) for theft of cash
- ✅ Legal liability: if you accidentally injure someone or damage property at a festival
What Festival Insurance Usually Doesn't Cover
Read the exclusions carefully : this is where policies differ most.
- ❌ Pre-existing medical conditions: unless you declare them and pay the surcharge upfront
- ❌ Alcohol-related incidents: most policies exclude claims where you were under the influence at the time
- ❌ Theft from an unattended tent: gear stolen while you're at the stage : many policies require 'attended' baggage
- ❌ Ticket resale losses: if you bought on a secondary market, cancellation cover may not apply
- ❌ Weather if the festival goes ahead: you dislike rain, but the event ran : not a valid claim
- ❌ Festival postponement (as opposed to cancellation): a reschedule, not a cancellation, is often excluded
- ❌ Items left unattended in a vehicle: stereos, laptops : excluded or very limited
Ticket Cancellation Insurance: The Fine Print
Some festivals and ticketing platforms (Ticketmaster, See Tickets, Dice) offer optional cancellation protection at checkout : usually 5–10 % of the ticket price. This is typically the narrowest form of cover: it refunds the face value of the ticket if YOU can't attend due to illness, accident or bereavement, but it does NOT cover the festival cancelling, travel costs, or accommodation.
- ✅ Useful if: you're buying an expensive single-day ticket and the rest of your trip is already covered
- ✅ Not enough if: you've also booked flights, hotels and travel : you need a full trip policy
- ✅ Check your credit card: some premium cards (Visa Infinite, Mastercard World Elite) include event ticket protection automatically
- ✅ Check if the festival has its own refund policy: Tomorrowland, Glastonbury and others have partial refund schemes under specific conditions
Medical Cover: The Most Important Part
For festivals within the EU and EEA, your EHIC or GHIC card (European Health Insurance Card / Global Health Insurance Card) gives you access to state-provided healthcare at local rates. It is not full insurance : it doesn't cover repatriation, private treatment or additional costs : but it reduces your exposure significantly.
- 🇪🇺 EU/EEA festivals (Tomorrowland, Paléo, Coachella Europe): EHIC covers emergencies; travel insurance tops up the gap
- 🇬🇧 UK festivals: GHIC still valid post-Brexit; covers NHS treatment at no charge for EU citizens
- 🇺🇸 USA festivals: NO reciprocal coverage : a single night in a US hospital averages $5 000–$10 000. Full medical cover is non-negotiable
- 🌍 Asia, Middle East, South America: same as USA : always insure, always check the medical limit (minimum €500 000 recommended)
How Much Does Festival Travel Insurance Cost?
Costs vary widely by trip length, destination and the level of cover. Here are realistic price ranges for a standard weekend festival trip:
- 💶 Domestic (France) : €5–€15 : basic trip cancellation + baggage
- 💶 Europe (Belgium, Switzerland, Spain) : €15–€35 for a weekend
- 💶 UK : €20–€45 (post-Brexit medical cover costs more than EU)
- 💶 USA : €40–€80 for a weekend with proper medical cover
- 💶 Annual multi-trip policy : €60–€150/year : best value if you attend 3+ festivals per year
Comparison sites to use: Assurland and LeLynx (France), Meilleurtaux, or directly with Allianz Travel, AXA Assistance or Chapka (specialists in travel insurance with good festival/event cover).
Tips for Buying the Right Policy
- ✅ Buy the day you book your tickets : cancellation cover only applies to costs incurred after the policy start date; buying after already feels ill doesn't count
- ✅ Read the gear per-item limit : if your camera is worth €800 and the limit is €300, you need a specialist add-on
- ✅ Declare pre-existing conditions : failing to do so voids the entire policy, not just the medical section
- ✅ Check the 'attended baggage' clause : most standard policies won't pay for gear stolen from your tent while you're at the stage
- ✅ Annual policy if you travel regularly : far cheaper than buying per trip, covers business travel too
- ✅ Keep all receipts : for any claim, you'll need proof of purchase for any lost or stolen items
