Festival tickets go on sale months before the lineup is announced. Hotels near Glastonbury sell out before Christmas. Flights to Coachella double in price the week tickets go on sale.
The booking order matters as much as the timing. Here's how to get each piece in place without overpaying.
The booking timeline at a glance
Different elements of your trip have very different booking windows. The festival ticket comes first, always. Everything else follows the ticket confirmation.
- 🎟️ Festival ticket: 3 to 12 months before the event, depending on demand
- 🏨 Hotel or rental near the venue: within 48 hours of buying your ticket for high-demand events
- ✈️ International flights: 3 to 5 months before for the best fares
- 🚆 Train tickets: 2 to 3 months before in Europe (when advance fares open)
- 🚗 Car rental: 1 to 3 months before, not earlier (rates often drop closer to the date)
One rule applies to all of them: book accommodation before flights. Once you have a bed, you have flexibility on how to get there.
Step one: the festival ticket
The ticket unlocks everything else. Nothing else gets booked until you have confirmation. This sounds obvious, but every year people book hotels and flights to festivals they don't end up getting tickets to.
- 🏆 Tier-1 festivals (Glastonbury, Coachella, Tomorrowland, Burning Man): registration months before sale, tickets gone within hours. Follow on social media and subscribe to newsletters a year in advance.
- 🎸 Major national festivals (Hellfest, Lollapalooza, Download): early bird goes on sale 6 to 9 months before. Full price announced with the lineup, usually 3 to 5 months before.
- 🎵 Regional and mid-size festivals: tickets available 3 to 6 months before. Less pressure, but good deals disappear with the early bird window.
- 🌿 Small and local festivals: often available 1 to 3 months before. Last-minute options sometimes exist.
Accommodation: book within 48 hours of your ticket
For any festival that attracts more than 50,000 people, the hotels and rentals within a reasonable distance disappear fast. Not days after tickets go on sale. Hours.
- 🏨 Hotels: search for accommodation on the same day you buy your ticket. Sort by proximity to the venue. Anything walkable or within 10 minutes fills up first.
- 🏠 Airbnb and short-term rentals: more supply than hotels, but prices spike around festival dates. Book early for the best rates and selection.
- 🏕️ Festival camping: usually sold as part of the ticket or as an add-on. Buy immediately with the ticket if it's optional.
- 🚐 Glamping and on-site options: limited supply, sold separately, often gone before the general public knows they exist. Check the festival site the same day tickets go on sale.
If you wait a week, you'll still find accommodation. But you'll pay 30 to 80% more and be further from the venue.
Flights: 3 to 5 months before
International flights for festival travel follow the same general rules as other travel, with one extra wrinkle: prices spike the moment a festival sells out because demand becomes inelastic. Book before the festival is publicly confirmed as sold out.
- ✈️ Transatlantic flights (Europe to US or vice versa): the best window is 3 to 5 months before departure. Earlier than 6 months offers no consistent advantage.
- 🌍 European short-haul (2 to 4 hours): 6 to 10 weeks before is typically the sweet spot for budget carriers. Booking too early often means higher fares.
- 🚆 Eurostar and TGV: international and high-speed train tickets in Europe go on sale exactly 3 months before departure on most routes. Set a calendar reminder.
- ⚠️ Price spike warning: if a major festival sells out in hours and you haven't booked yet, prices will jump immediately. Every travel search engine will index the demand signal.
Use Google Flights price tracking or Skyscanner alerts to monitor fares from when tickets go on sale to your booking window. The trend tells you whether to act now or wait.
Booking timelines by festival size
The booking urgency scales directly with festival size and demand. Here's a practical guide.
- 🔴 Sold-out flagship festivals (Glastonbury, Coachella, Tomorrowland): ticket registration up to 12 months before, accommodation same day as ticket sale, flights within the week
- 🟠 Large national festivals (Hellfest, Rock en Seine, Reading, Download): ticket 6 to 9 months before, accommodation within 1 week of ticket, flights 3 to 4 months before
- 🟡 Mid-size festivals (50k to 100k): ticket 3 to 6 months before, accommodation within 1 to 2 weeks of ticket, flights 6 to 8 weeks before
- 🟢 Smaller festivals: ticket 1 to 3 months before, accommodation and transport can wait 2 to 4 weeks
