Flying across the world for a single concert and flying home the next day feels wasteful. Flying across the world for a marathon finish line, a holiday spectacular and a Formula 1 night race, that's a trip.
Multi-event itineraries require more planning upfront but cost far less per experience. This guide covers the logic, the logistics and several concrete US circuits you can build around events already on sale.
Why combining events cuts costs and raises stakes
Flights and hotels are the fixed costs of any trip. Each extra event you stack onto one trip costs almost nothing additional in transport. A three-event weekend in New York costs roughly the same in flights as a one-event weekend.
The stakes go up too. When several events anchor the same trip, one cancellation doesn't ruin everything. You have backup experiences built into the itinerary.
- ✅ Anchor first: book the hardest-to-get event first, then add others around it
- ✅ Use buffer days: leave 24 hours between events in different cities for travel delays
- ✅ Mix free and paid: free spectator events (marathons, street festivals) balance expensive tickets
How to build your multi-event calendar
Start with a geographic cluster. Events in cities within a 4-hour train ride or short flight make the logistics manageable. New York to Philadelphia, Los Angeles to Las Vegas, or Chicago to Milwaukee all work well.
Then add a rhythm. Two events with two full days between them gives you one travel day and one exploration day. More than four events in seven days tends to feel rushed.
- 🗓️ Geographic cluster: cities within 4 hours of each other by ground or short flight
- 🗓️ Rhythm: 2-day gaps between events for travel and rest
- 🗓️ Mix: one marquee paid event, one free spectator event, one cultural or food experience
New York in early November: marathon plus holiday spectacular
The first weekend of November puts two events within three days of each other in Manhattan.
TCS New York City Marathon 2026
📅 Date: 1 November 2026
📍 Venue: Staten Island to Central Park, New York, NY
💰 Price: Free for spectators
Watching the NYC Marathon costs nothing. The route runs through all five boroughs. Miles 16 through 20 in Brooklyn and Queens offer dense crowds and fast runners, better than the finish line for atmosphere. Show up by 9am for the wheelchair and elite starts.

📍 Venue: Radio City Music Hall, New York, NY

Las Vegas in November and December: F1 then New Year's Eve
Las Vegas runs two major events seven weeks apart, which makes a single long trip or two separate trips both viable options.
F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix 2026
📅 Date: 21 November 2026
📍 Venue: Las Vegas Strip Circuit, Las Vegas, Nevada
The Las Vegas Grand Prix runs on the Strip at night. The race infrastructure stays in place for several days before race day, so arriving on the 18th or 19th gives you practice and qualifying sessions. See the F1 fall 2026 calendar guide for session times and ticket types.
America's Party, New Year's Eve on the Las Vegas Strip 2026
📅 Date: 31 December 2026
📍 Venue: Las Vegas Strip, Las Vegas, Nevada
💰 Price: Free
The Strip fireworks display on December 31 is free to watch from the street. Casino viewing packages are sold separately and vary by property. Book your hotel for December 30 and 31 as early as possible, rates spike sharply in the week before New Year's Eve.
NHL Winter Classic 2027
📅 Date: 31 December 2026
📍 Venue: Rice-Eccles Stadium, Salt Lake City
If you prefer Salt Lake City over Las Vegas for New Year's, the outdoor NHL Winter Classic between the Utah Mammoth and the Colorado Avalanche plays at Rice-Eccles Stadium the same evening. Salt Lake City is a 6-hour drive from Las Vegas, a workable extension if you have the days.
Routing your trip: the practical side
Open-jaw flights save the most time on multi-city trips. Fly into New York, take a domestic flight to Las Vegas, then fly home from Las Vegas. Airlines price open-jaw itineraries roughly the same as round-trips when the cities are both major hubs.
Ground transport between events matters more than people expect. The NYC Marathon finish is in Central Park. Radio City is on 51st and 6th. The walk between them is twelve minutes. Plan these micro-logistics before you arrive.
- ✅ Open-jaw flights: fly into city A, home from city B, no backtracking
- ✅ Check event load-in times: many events restrict entry during the first hour
- ✅ Hotel location: stay within 20 minutes of each event on foot or subway
For flight disruptions, always a risk when an event is time-sensitive, read what to do when your flight gets cancelled before a festival.
Budget and booking order
Book the hardest event first. F1 Las Vegas tickets sell out months in advance. The NHL Winter Classic and Rockettes tickets stay available longer but hotel rooms around those dates go fast.
- 🎯 Book first: the event with the most limited tickets (usually sports, then concerts)
- 🎯 Book second: hotel rooms for all nights, especially New Year's Eve
- 🎯 Book last: flights, they fluctuate and work around everything else
- 🎯 Leave slack: avoid same-day connections between cities for high-stakes events
Travel insurance that covers trip interruption is worth it on multi-event trips. One missed event is frustrating. Two missed events in a row due to a delay or illness can wipe out most of what the trip cost. See festival travel insurance explained for what to look for.
Spring 2027: more anchors to build around
